Dr. Sketchy's

On Monday night I went to an event called 'Dr. Sketchy's Murder in the Mansion'. It was a mix between a murder mystery evening and a live-drawing session, and it was great! There were a few models in clothes you'd never see in art school, posing for us in a beautiful historical place in Antwerp (Huis Happaert). Everyone had a blast! Here are some of my sketches:

I'll definitely be going to another one of these events again! I love life drawing, and this is such a fun way to do it.

Winokio

It has been awfully quiet over here! There was a good reason for that. I'm now working on getting my master's degree, which means I've been spending most of this school year on one massive long-term project. Apart from that, I've been working on something else: an illustrated book! As you might remember, I was asked to provide the artwork for a Kapitein Winokio cd a while ago. A few months ago I was contacted again: they wanted to republish the cd as a book with illustrations for each song, and asked me to make them. So here it is, a book with my name somewhere on it!

It felt really strange to go into a bookstore and see it sitting on the shelves. I was quite giddy about it. It's been a lot of work but I'm really happy with how the illustrations turned out!

Morocco
Every illustration was hand cut from paper, scanned and digitally put together. I worked with the graphic designer on this, first giving him a photoshop version of how I saw everything coming together and later giving feedback on the compositions he made.

Italy

Finland

Spain
The colours turned out really great, it's a pretty happy book!

Cuba

Korea
The initial idea was to combine images of the Kapitein with landscapes from the country each song was from. However, I'm not too fond of drawing landscapes and felt like the illustrations became too cliché. So I started looking at folk art and traditional patterns for each country, using them to make backgrounds.

I'm really happy about the result and very grateful to be given this chance! They asked me to do a second book as well, which is currently wrapping up. Stay tuned...
