One of the current assignments in school is about a storytelling experiment. We don't get a complete story to illustrate, but made a drawing with a few fixed elements to start from, and new drawings are commissioned every week as new parts of the story are revealed. Everything we put in our drawing can affect how the story progresses! This is the first page of the story: it had to show ourselves in our workspace, right when a text comes in.

last year, i made a book about a song called 'from my own true love (lost at sea)' by the decemberists. it was for an assignment about paper, and you can see the results here.
I do have to say, this song wasn't my first choice. i wanted to do a different one but it was eight minutes long and had a lot of text, and i simply didn't have the time to do that and feel good about it. so i compromised.
but this year i listened to my first choice again and decided to just make that book anyway, in my spare time. i worked on it between assignments and managed to print and bind it just in time to see them play here in antwerp, so i could give it to them. so here are a few images from the book i've wanted to make since last year, the mariner's revenge song:

I forgot to take pictures of the book and now i gave it away, but i'll take those as soon as i've made a second copy.

dez mona - pool concert

it's been a while since i did any concert photography, but when i was asked to picture a very special show by dez mona, i didn't hesitate to say yes.

they played in the evening, next to a beautiful art deco pool in antwerp. it has recently been renovated and has a very nice atmosphere. they had candles and little lights up, and played an acoustic set, followed by a swim. i tried to capture the mood in my photos.

our first illustration assignment of the year was about the belgian writer christophe vekeman. we had to give our own interpretation of his work. i chose to work about his book '49 manieren om de dag door te komen' ('49 ways to make it through the day') since i kind of liked the themes of loneliness and budding insanity. i mainly wanted to create a lonely and silent atmosphere by drawing locations from the story right after or right before something had happened there.

it's been a very long time since i last posted something, mainly because school started and most of my assignments were the long kind, that take a few months to finish.

this is something i made for a video editing class, maybe you remember the images from this book i made last year... i finally found the time to make it into a short movie, something i had planned to do all along!

some parts of the video aren't dynamic enough for me, but that's mainly because i did it all by myself-starting the music, starting the camera and doing all the movement!

my entry for the drawing contest what's your excuse, by the antwerp comic book shop mekanik... i sort of forgot about it and ended up changing my initial idea (an airport) to a train station on friday- three days or so before the deadline. what followed were three days of scribbling at top-speed. i'm not entirely happy about the result, but it could have been worse!

i recently became 'artist in residence' at Nova in Antwerp, which basically means that i draw the covers for their brochures and do other pretty stuff. this was my illustration for the first cover...

and here's the print version! i was very excited about this and it turned out rather well.

they even included some text about me to flatter my huge ego.

some people might remember this post here: an illustration i made for a small layout assignment in school. after posting this i was contacted by kapitein winokio himself to do the illustration work for his new cd, an album with children's songs from all over the world. this cd was released a few days ago:

it has taken quite a lot of work, but i'm very excited about the final result! this is the first time i saw my work in actual print somewhere, and i couldn't help but squeal a bit when i spotted the album in a large record store.

it's been an awfully long time since i posted anything, but i've been working on projects for a long time so i didn't really have anything to show...

now i am showing you things, and i'm even selling them! i'm talking about all this:

'wonder' about a day in a city that ends with a party. this is basically my final project for school, minus the text. the book measures about 13,5 cm x 19 cm when closed, 10 spreads, handmade, printed on high quality paper, numbered and signed. limited print of five books.

i just started experimenting with an old nikon camera my father gave me. these are some pictures from the first roll of film i had developed, i think they turned out rather nice, even though the film had expired about five years ago. the boy in one of the pictures is my partner jangojim, who was also nice enough to scan them for me, since my scanner is still dead.

this is an illustration assignment in collaboration with ringling college of art and design. we had to describe a day in our life through one or more images. i started cutting these papers and i kind of like the result, but i wish i had the time to redo the first two ones and make them more of a whole, like the third one.

the hand is not mine but michelle's, she volunteered to help me dowument my work. it also gives an idea of the size.
